121 Safety has been in operation since February 2013 and Dean has a strong background within the Building
&
Construction industry.
For over 20 years, Dean has been mentoring and assisting small, medium, and large builders/contractors in
the
residential, commercial, and industrial construction sector, including 11+ years working with Master
Builders
Queensland (MBQ) and the Housing Industry Association (HIA).
From February 2014 to November 2020, Dean was employed by Ausbuild as their WHS Advisor and then WHS
Manager which included acting as the company Rehabilitation & Return to Work Coordinator, Building Fire
Safety
Adviser and Apprentice Manager.
He also acted as Ausbuild’s gatekeeper when engaging new suppliers and subcontractors ensuring licensing,
insurances, and ABN’s match, implemented and renewed subcontract agreements annually.
Since May 2018, Dean has also been engaged by Douglas Construction & Engineering initially as a WHS
Coordinator, to assist with monthly desktop monitoring and maintaining their third party accreditation to
OHSAS18001:2007. During this time, Dean re-wrote their entire system and achieved surveillance audit (July
2018),
re-accreditation May 2019 and then transitioning to ISO45001:2018 in July 2020 and a full Quality,
Environment &
Safety Integrated Management System during 2022. He now represents DCE as their HSEQ Manager.
Dean’s experience with QBCC (& other regulated licensing) and the age-old issue of who is a
“subcontractor vs
worker” enables him to advise on Award Conditions and implement Letters of Appointment, Common Law
Agreements, Induction Checklists, develop tailored Induction Training and advise on HR related issues like
performance management, issuing warnings and avoid cases for wrongful dismissal.
As a licensed Fire Safety Adviser (Qld Fire & Emergency Services), Dean can assist you to prepare a Fire
&
Emergency Plan (& Diagrams), develop (and/or deliver) required General Occupant/First Response training
as is
required under the Qld Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008.
Dean is also a qualified trainer and assessor with many years’ experience developing and delivering
workshops,
information sessions and short courses and he uses this experience to assist groups of workers to carry out
required
consultation processes when conducting tool box talks, developing and/or training for safe work procedures
and safe
work method statements.
Dean has experience writing, securing and maintaining third party accredited OHS Management Systems
including
AS/NZ4801:2001, OHSAS18001:2007, ISO45001:2018 as well as Federal Safety Accreditation. Dean has also
completed the current Exemplar Global Integrated Management Systems External Lead Auditor training which
means
he is qualified to write and audit ISO45001 OH&S Management Systems, ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
and ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems or an Integrated Management System.
He also holds the new Certificate of Authorisation from WHS Queensland to be appointed a Work Health and
Safety
Officer.
Dean can help you when WHSQ Inspectors are conducting enforcement visits at building sites and respond to or
defend Notices and Infringements (fines) issued by WHS Qld and has had a high success rate with
Internal/External
Reviews resulting in Notices being cancelled.
While Dean has the experience and knowledge of the higher level accredited systems, he specialises in
writing
simpler systems that focus on meeting legal obligations as the priority. One of the benefits of working with
Dean is that
he is a big believer in keeping paperwork simple.
He believes that any safety paperwork that is too lengthy or overly detailed can be difficult to understand
and therefore
too hard to apply at the workplace and then be equally hard to monitor or review. If your workers easily
understand it,
then they will more easily comply with it.
Safe Work Not Paperwork is Dean’s mantra.
